ARLIE @ DC9 // 06.21.22
Following the release of their debut full-length album, BREAK THE CURSE, Arlie kicked off their “BREAK THE CURSE TOUR 2022” on the east coast, performing for a completely sold-out crowd at DC9 Nightclub in Washington DC. They set out in late June to play a well anticipated tour across North America, backed by special guest performers at nearly every stop. Something Simple, a local DC musical “collective” as they describe themselves, and psych-pop band Nordista Freeze opened the night, warming up the crowd with their unique, alternative songs.
The Nashville based indie-pop group, Arlie, brings a bright and modern twist to the classic retro-rock sounds of their new album – BREAK THE CURSE – and their fun and funky style definitely translated to the stage as they jammed out for the crowd. With a selection of tracks from their new album peppered with a few older favorites, Arlie’s enthusiastic fanbase seemed thrilled by the diverse set list. The intimate DC9 venue enabled them to deliver a heavy dose of feel-good vibes to their friendly and loyal fans.
At many points throughout the show, front-man Nathaniel Banks swayed through the crowd, serenading many with song and enamoring them with soft smiles. Mid-set he disappeared briefly, only to return for a surprise saxophone solo that had everyone going wild over the performance. Toward the end, friends and fellow Nashville musicians, Nordista Freeze, joined them on stage for a frenzied tambourine solo that riled up the room.
Breaking into a uniquely amusing encore, Arlie pulled out a large plaid blanket, and all the members huddled underneath as if they were invisible. Once completely covered, they waited a few moments while fans laughed and cheered at their antics, then popped out as if they had suddenly returned to the stage. It was truly a creative and comedic moment before they finished out the last few songs of the night.
After a busy month playing across North America, Arlie has already announced a swift and happy return later this year, accompanying The Wrecks on tour in fall. Be sure to catch a show by this effortlessly cool band!
